Grandmom Desserts @ Seri Kembangan, Selangor

Not sure whether do you remember or not, before the rise of contemporary cafes and bubble milk tea stalls, 'Yu Yuan' or Yam Ball dessert was the hype of all gatherings, meet-ups, must-trys etc. We had a few 'big brands' that sold this Taiwanese dessert, made up of ice, yam balls, red beans (or green beans), grass jelly etc. It is cooling and filling at the same time, thus was the most 'trendy' foodstuff before.

It has been a while since we tried 'Yu Yuan' dessert (well, except for our trip at Taiwan). The last experience we had in Malaysia was disappointing - we ate one of the 'big brands' around, the price gone so much higher and the condiments in the dessert were not as tasty as before. Coincidentally, when we were hunting around for a decent snack to fill our stomachs, we came across this small corner in Foursquare. Both of us LOVE Taiwan so much, so we decided to give it a try - and to remind ourselves of the Taiwanese taste that we missed so much.

Located just opposite the Pos Malaysia office in Seri Kembangan along Jalan Besar - same row as Hong Leong Bank, this small corner is easily noticeable with its bright green signboard. Parking spaces were limited; therefore we circled the area 3 times before parking in front of the post office (opposite the shop).

Easy to spot due to its bright green signboard. Look opposite the Pos Malaysia office while you are driving along Jalan Besar

Once we stepped into the shop, we fell in love with the place! The walls, the lamps, the whole place was filled with sticky notes written by their customers. Most of them were sweet messages for the shop and some confession notes as well. So Taiwanese style right :) While we had our meal, we read through the sticky notes and found some really nice handwritings! Well there was a note wishing a couple will breakup so that the one who wrote it can get one of them as a partner. So mean right.

Counter of the shop
The shop practises a full Self-Service environment; we had to place our order at the counter, wait for our number to be displayed and then collect our order at the counter. The prices of the desserts were quite reasonable - RM6.30 per bowl, making RM12.60 for both of us - without second thought, both of us ordered a dessert each under the 'Best Sellers' category. Both came with Soya Ice, Grass Jelly, Red Beans. Only difference was one was with Yam Balls (芋圓) and the other was with Matcha Balls.

Some of the shop's signature desserts
Dessert 4001 - Yam Balls + Soya Ice + Red Beans + Grass Jelly. RM6.30.
Dessert 4006 - Matcha Balls + Soya Ice + Red Beans + Grass Jelly. RM6.30.
The taste of the desserts were not too sweet, and definitely can taste that the Soya Ice is homemade as well. As compared to several other big brands out there, it is the best we can get with such a decent price. As many shops do, Grandmom Dessert also practises the loyalty stamp and card, if you collected 10 stamps in a card, you may redeem 1 free dessert from them.

We shall try this during our next visit!
